Senator James Inhofe

Jim Inhofe is a life-long conservative who has consistently fought for the values of greater freedoms, a strong national defense, a smaller federal government, and less government intrusion into the lives of the American people.  Through his years of public service as a Member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Minority Leader of the Oklahoma Senate, Mayor of Tulsa, Congressman from Oklahoma’s First Congressional District, and now in his present role as Oklahoma’s senior U.S. Senator, Jim has honorably served Oklahoma and the nation.

First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994, Jim has served on the U.S. Senate Committees on Environment and Public Works, Senate Armed Services, and Foreign Relations. In January 2003, Jim became the chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, where he strengthened our nation’s infrastructure through the passage of the 2005 Highway Bill and relentlessly fought against global warming taxes, stating that global warming is the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated against the American people.” His steadfast opposition led to the defeat of global warming taxes in the Senate and provided a voice to disenfranchised scientists who, until the recent Climategate scandal, had largely been silenced.

Currently, as the top Republican on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Jim continues to lead the fight against overreaching government regulations, including liberal-backed cap-and-trade legislation. As the first Senator to vocally oppose global warming legislation, his service has been marked by the courage he continually demonstrates in standing for what is right – even when he is the only one.

During his tenure in Congress, Jim has been voted the #1 Conservative in the U.S. Senate by National Journal and “Most Outstanding Conservative U.S. Senator” by Human Events and the American Conservative Union. He is annually recognized by organizations for his consistent, conservative leadership including the “Lifetime Service Award” from the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, the National Taxpayers Association’s “Friends of the Taxpayer” Award, the “Hero of the Taxpayer Award” from Americans for Tax Reform, the American Farm Bureau’s “Friend of the Farm Bureau” Award, the Center for Security Policy’s “Keeper of the Flame” Award, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Spirit of Enterprise” Award, and an “A+” rating from the National Rifle Association.

A lifelong Oklahoman, Jim graduated from the University of Tulsa with a degree in economics. He has been married 52 years to Kay, and has four children and twelve grandchildren.
